ZENOBIA LAKDAWALLA

I am a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Maui, Hawaii. I grew up in Mumbai, India, and moved to Boston to study design at the Massachusetts College of Art.

Since graduating with a Masters in Fine Arts degree in Boston, I have worked at leading design studios and agencies in Mumbai, Boston and Maui.

I believe that in part, my varied cultural influences shape my work. The sensorial overload but spiritually centered experience of growing up in Mumbai, my years of self-exploration and exposure to western art and critical thinking in Boston, and now, the seductive beauty and slow pace of life in Hawaii, converge to create work that is quiet yet complex.

With my art, my interests lie somewhere between conceptual art and minimalism. My work tends towards a minimalist vocabulary and a reductive aesthetic. My process is meditative, repetitive and methodical. Texture, materiality and color play an important role. I am interested in ideas of perception, light, tricking or cheating the eye. I use a variety of mediums and often respond to the material itself, pushing the limits of the medium or using it in new and unique ways.

Working as a graphic designer brings a graphic sensibility to my art as I pare down elements to their simplest form and distill ideas to communicate them easily. Each discipline informs the other.

In my work as a designer, I try to create a brand for the client that tells their unique story, in a meaningful and memorable way.
